GARDEN VARIETY

HEY THERE I'M NOT FUCKING DEAD. I just let the blog asleep because I had a lot of personal things to deal with, but now it's almost done and hey, here we go again with an AWESOME band. Here's the context of the dscovery : It was during a label meeting with the friends (we are Smart & Confused, send us your records!). We discussed everything and nothing, about a scammer of the Parisian scene around an excellent risotto (thank you B. for my vegan part!), And an incredible album was palying on the background. Perfectly this kind of warm post-hardcore , as percussive as slightly chaotic, that I love so much, with full of life-saving melodies at the HÜSKER DÜ, under the influence of Dischord Records, RITES OF SPRING first. I didn't knew at all what was playing then, but I was afraid I just forgot about this band actually. I ended up asking, looking a little embarrassed, at one of the friends what was this fucking record, and here's the answer illustrated in this post.

I really missed something so far, because this record, Knocking The Skill Level, is absolutely insane. I think they really helped to make the bridge the chaos and energy peaks that post-hardcore took in their days with DRIVE LIKE JEHU, MOSS ICON or SWING KIDS, and finally the origins of style where it was about spreading pop influences in the violence and spontaneity of what was again a prototype of hardcore, to offer an ultimate fusion of both parts of the scene, and a real gift for our ears. I think we could consider them as an angrier version of Diary-era SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE... For a little over 45 minutes, we are immersed in a continuous surge of tension and percussive riffs, chiseled and catchy, perfectly supporting the mood of the disc, transcended by the best emo melodies with a touch of noise rock to spice up and densify the whole.

Obviously influenced by HÜSKER DÜ, the band also counts among its musical mentors another predecessor of post-hardcore, SQUIRREL BAIT, and this is audible on their previous record, less memorable but just as cool (and only available on Spotify, on obcure blogspots and Soulseek). It was more primitive, simpler in terms of instrumentation, more "punk rock" and less dissonant. But fuck, this is so DAMN catchy. And the intro riff of "Binder" sounds a lot like "Head Club" from TAKING BACK SUNDAY, which is miles away from the music of GARDEN VARIETY... I highly doubt that TAKING BACK SUNDAY were influenced by the band we are talking about today (maybe I'm wrong, who knows!), but it's a great excuse to let you know about one the best songs of the best TBS album lol!

Just after listening to Knocking The Skill Level on Youtube, the album The Killer Was In The Government Blankets by YAPHET KOTTO was automatically suggested and played several times, and I think it's safe to say that the cult screamo bands seems to have been inspired in a way or another by this GARDEN VARIETY record, and I think this band had a much bigger influence that we can imagine, at least on the emo / screamo records of that era... I'm thinking of bands like LIFE AT THESE SPEEDS or BROCCOLI, also CHAVEZ (whose guitarist ended up forming an alternative rock band with the infernal Billy Corgan, named ZWAN) which appeared a bit at the same time as GARDEN VARIETY, which stood in this more "grunge" side, SONIC YOUTH-worship of post-HxC, and I'm also thinking about this bunch of bands in which Sarah Kirsch played, such as TORCHES TO ROME, BAADER BRAINS, BREAD AND CIRCUITS or JOHN HENRY WEST... which all seems to have preserved their innate sense of energy, passion and breathtaking melodies, as an heritage and a tribute. Anyway, just listen to that record, you'll love it, this isn't even debatable.

Oh, and here's an interview of the drummer, Joe Gorelick, about the story and influences of the band. He later played on BLUE TIP! From what I know, a vinyl repress of Knocking The Skill Level is planned for sometime this year... STOKED.
