NUMBERS ARE NEUTRALS

Ah, those traditions of making resolutions for next year, trying to do things that we actually can't because 1) it's to correspond to standards that normally oppresses us and / or we dislike, or 2) by pure phlegm. Well, when I woke up on the first day of 2019, I had a spontaneous kind of good resolution, I gave up on this thing lol! I decided that I was going to give a little more life to this blog, by even creating him an Instagram page, hoping that I wouldn't lose my motivation later. I told myself that it would be really cool to doing again this thing to write spontaneously on the records that I want to make you discover at the moment.

And the timing is good, because I had a demo which dragged among a large mass of open tabs on my smartphone, which I wanted to share with you, this kind of stuff that gives an absolute sense to my mission as an actual  "dictionary of emo": to refer forgotten gems of the history of this scene, which are often pressed in old cassettes or CD-R with DIY fabric covers. The band I want to share with you today is called NUMBERS ARE NEUTRAL. It's super hard to find informations about them, because by typing their name on the internet, even adding "screamo" or "demo" to the research, we mostly fall on videos related to mathematics, tutorials for computer programming, and transformers for sale. So, for the easy joke, so it's quickly done: no, I'm not gonna make you listen to a math-rock demo today.

As often, the research of information on a group of emo / screamo ends on Discogs, blogspots and via the contacts of the internets and the scene, and here's what I could find: it's an ephemeral screamo band, whose exact period of activity isn't known, coming from the East Coast, USA, with a person who played in many other little-known projects (including ELDRITCH ANISETTE where he was a guitarist) , and who released this demo (which according to the only article I found on this record, and according to Soulseek, would be called School Sucks!) in 2000, and participated in the compilation Summertime, which gathered a lot of screamo bands that were thriving at the time: SAETIA, THE VIDABLUE (pre-TEN GRAND), pg.99, NEIL PERRY, and even THURSDAY. In that record, there is also a 13-minute weird noise track, some false grind / quasi-screamo like USURP SYNAPSE... I'd like to get my hands on this compilation, it seems to be a great-looking item, it's coming with a zine, a DIY "camo" fabric cover and everything.

And this demo, which is the only thing that the band released (knowing that the song that appears on the compilation mentioned above, "Fedaykin", also appears on the demo), seems well ahead of its time, to me. I struggled to find bands that offered the same musical universe as this band, before them... There were inevitably influenced by post-hardcore, and I think they have listened a lot to SAETIA. Their music lives mainly around quiet/loud dynamics, with a heavy emphasis on the melody. I think the beautiful "Porcelain" is somewhata tribute to PORTRAIT, which existed before NUMBERS ARE NEUTRAL: the same use of violin, a break that sounds like the one on the famous "Constellations In A Stargazing Iris"...

It sounds a lot like BELLE EPOQUE, sometimes like THE SADDEST LANDSCAPE, if you wanna have an idea of how this band sounds with more "recent" names. Anyway, I'm listening to this demo ion repeat now: that's all I love in the slightly more incisive, sad and visceral side of the screamo. I felt good listening to this record walking here and there in the streets, and that's a good sign.

I'm very happy to share this discovery with you, hoping you'll love it as much as I do. ♡

PREMIERE : Disillusionist - Exasperated

-

I wasn't thinking of starting the year so soon in terms of posts, and it's pretty cool because it already motivates me to share a lot of stuff now. I owe this little boost to Mads of Dasein Records who suggested me to discover DISILLUSIONIST. Coming from Copenhagen, Denmark, this band, whose line-up seems rather mysterious and unveiled, offers a fairly common but always pleasant formula in the modern hardcore scene: a light, melodic whole, with clear guitars sprinkled with some post-punk influences, completed with a lot of emotional discharge. Basically, if you love TOUCHÉ AMORÉ and COMADRE vocals, or maybe STATE FAULTS, you should like this single. I'm glad to be the first person to share it with you! I love how that track ends in a wall of drums...

-

It's called "Exasperated", this song will figure on an EP named The Fire on the freeway as seen from the mountains, which will be released soon at Dasein Records, where you will also find another single, "Stale Flower", a shorter, more direct song, but with the same formula, with more fuzz in the guitars though. It's almost frustrating when it stops, because that song is great and we are easily enjoyed by his melodies, I expected that it lasts the time of an additional verse maybe... I'm pretty curious to hear the entire record, to see how this frustration will be filled, to find out more about this band and his sound! And also the line-up actually, haha ;)

TOP "LAST MINUTE"

Long time no see: why I'm not writing that much anymore.

Hey y'all. I hope everyone who goes through here is fine.

I guess you will have noticed, I don't really write much content currently... At one time, I wrote/posted several times a week, or even a day. Now it's quite exceptional when I post an article a month. It's normal: I lost all this energy and passion that made me want to write on all these records that I still take so much pleasure to listen, buy, share... But, this feather with which I told you about these records, isn't as sharp as before, and now I'm sorely lacking of that energy, of that time I had before.

It's terribly frustrating: I still go to a lot of concerts, I spend my time on obscure Facebook groups, dead forums and blogspots to find music to discover every single day, almost every hour, and yet I can't write you about it as much as I did before. And fuck, I really want to tell you about all that, but I don't know anymore how to do, without having the feeling of being annoying, to just spam...

In fact, work has played a big part in this: The more time passes, the less I have opportunities and inspiration to write. At first, when I worked with that alcoholic and oppressive coworker, which was absolutely not looking at what I was doing in the store, and then with another colleague who was just older than me and replaced him, I could find a lot of time to write, and a fucking lot. But now that she's no longer there, and that our manager has accelerated the pace in terms of sales objectives in store (I work in a lighting store as a seller...), I feel like I can't glue myself on the computer and write like I did until like 2017... I feel self-blame, while in fact, I don't do much more for the store than before, because I don't give a flying FUCK about the store and the objectives lmao. I just feel like I can't write because the boss is behind, even where he's not there. That the assistant manager with whom I work, as cool as she is, look at me more at this level, want me to be more on the lookout for customers. And once at home, I just want to empty and think about nothing, and listen to these records that gives me chills...

I also spend a lot of time and reflexion in politics, which requires my brain to work and focus more on what I read, share, do. And there are the concerts, outings, discussions with my friends and family... I devote my free time to help and contribute. When it comes to write, I always put it to tomorrow, because it can wait. While the pain and the love of our friends, our families, the questioning of our societies, of our modes of consumption, of our privileges... It musn't wait.

And then, this blog was also a personal refuge, where I found the escape and the intimacy that I didn't had when I lived in a shared flat with people which I considered as strangers, that I felt alone, that I couldn't confide. Now things have changed: I have my home, great people to confide in, even more people to meet during concerts and outside... I also have this small label/asso, Smart & Confused, that we launched this summer with 2 close friends, we want to focus on this even if we all want to make something cool, we want to have fun and share good vibes / good politics... Now, I have less vital need to go there and write...

So, is the blog dead? No, I don't want to stop or close him. Never. But I want to assume that this is a place where I would post exceptionally, when I'll have the energy and confidence in my words, where I wouldn't have the pressure of having to post all my finds of the month, because there are releases that we absolutely have to talk about because hype and stuff. And besides, I listen a lot more records in many other different kinds of music than emo/screamo at this moment, more than ever, I don't even listened really much to emo/screamo this year, while becoming quite picky-on in my criterias of appreciation of music... Which makes even more content to process.

I also have a big frustration: this year, like last year, I told you that the site would change, that it would open up, become more politicized. Well, it never happened, because I'm still waiting for the new site, its wallpaper, its domain name... And I'm tired of waiting. I do not care about all this in the end. Keeping this blogspot as it is, it suits me well in the end. Nothing prevents me to offer contributions from everyone who would like, by spinning my access data.

It's all in the end a lot of things that clash, and that I want to preserve my pen, my passion, my feelings, for a favorite article, something that will have really touched me, marked, or an important subject that will touch me, and on which I would like to write.

I hope this update, which I needed to write and share, will have helped you to see more clearly about the silence of the blog for some time. I'm still passionate about these scenes, by all that I share on the Facebook page and continue to do, we will always meet often at Paris concerts, sometimes elsewhere in France, the Miss The Stars Fest or Fluff Fest ... On that, I think that only death or deafness can stop me :) !

Take care. ♡

MUSIC OVERLOAD / EMOTIONS OVERFLOW #8

Let's be honest : I was really too lazy to write MUSIC OVERLOAD / EMOTIONS OVERFLOW stuff until now, even If i wanted to write them so much! But I never found the time for it, I couldn't find time to write at work, and I procrastinate(d) too much. It pisses me off, but forcing me to write would be worse, but at the same time, I don't want you to miss out on all the sick stuff released this year, until now. So for the moment, I'm doing what I'm able to do with the motivation I have at the moment : here is my selection of emo / screamo records released in the first half and summer of 2018 not to miss, an non-exhaustive list because others who are not present on this list have already been mentioned on my blog, and others will follow. Next edition before next year, I swear! :D

CASSUS - SEPARATION ANXIETY

- "We say how sweet the sound as empty messages play loud, what do you care about? Can't think as these pictures race round".

~

With Separation Anxiety, which on my screamo favs of the year so far, Cassus confirms that he is still one of the best screamo bands of the moment, and remains on his fundamentals: a discharge of jerky rhythms, fast, dissonant but always sad but catchy melodies, in the right vein of bands like Orchid or Ampere, keeping this skill and virtuosity close to math-rock that we see quite a lot in the English scene. They remind me of Maths, of  the emo-friendly bands from Holy Roar Records...

Lyrically, it deals a little more with the mental and psychological aspect of life than politics, which nevertheless remains strongly present (and taking into account that our capitalist societies greatly contributes to swelling the mental and societal malaise that devour us), like in "Getting Older Younger" which denounces the prominence of brands and their importance in the socialization of young people at school... This competition that we experience in adulthood, actually inculcated in the playgrounds provoked and motivated by these brands, and the system they nurture and develop: the need created through frustration, shame, obligations, norms.

There is always a beautiful illustrated zine with the LP, this time less under a traditional "punk fanzine" aspect, but illustrated by a single artistic line: abstract and colors. I find it good that this record is made well distinct from This Is Dead Art [...], without it being a pause, but rather a sequel. I particularly like "Being Sick On A Merry-Go-Round" and his sweet and groovy intro, a piece that differs from the disc while remaining in its general mood. - "We say how sweet the sound as empty messages play loud, what do you care about? Can't think as these pictures race round".

~

With Dénouement, Respire have managed to make a record as atypical and grandiose as Gravity & Grace. It's often categorized screamo, but it's not really the case: it's primarily post-black metal, heavily influenced by indie rock, post-rock, AND: a lot by screamo. This last influence is mainly based in the strong cathartic potential of the songs, in the deeply sad mood, the spontaneity of the song... We find again these brasses that surprised everyone on the first record (yes indeed, Respire members listen to American Football), as well than the orchestral parts reminiscent of Yndi Halda or Youth Pictures Of Florence Hendelson, all subtly dosed, and sounding even sadder than the first album, with some parts that would have nothing to envy to sludge metal, as shows the crushing breakdown from "Catacombs". This song, as well as the whole album, revolves around the theme of addiction and depression, resulting in very personal texts, illustrated by a song inevitably deeply borrowed from these dark words. If you liked the song "Eternal Nothing", you'll love Dénouement for sure, which will surely be part of my top album in his category.

CARSON WELLS - NO RELIC

~

Well, it looks like I didn't write much about them, but really, this record is superb. The scottish people in Carson Wells recorded with no relic a record as beautiful as his artwork, signed by Andy Hemming. The tempo is slowing down compared to all their previous releases (the single "Same Grave" released last year teased us about this change tho), but it's wanted: it's a really moody and hovering kind of post-hardcore, but at the same time full of this permanent tension and these guitars that look like sparks that crackle everywhere. They manage to synthesize all the strength of their music and to lengthen it while keeping its intensity, and it's very strong. To resume, it sounds a little more like Self Defense Family minus their current post-punk inspirations. This record is in the image of people who have composed it: more mature, with a more "adult" approach to life, while maintaining the carelessness, fragility, passion that characterizes them since the beginning. Thank you all for this gem.

KID FERAL - LIVE AND LET'S DIE!

~

Once again, the Swedish scene offers a screamo record of great quality, especially since it has a certain resonance in our time. They were the last band to play the big stages at Fluff Fest this year, and it was one of the craziest screamo shows I saw until now. Kid, Feral is a band from Skövde, a tiny town where there is no other hardcore punk band than them. And through Kid, Feral, the Swedish cool persons express their frustrations, exorcise boredom, confide and have fun without taboos, giving an album full of life and urgency, as tense as fun. It's deeply marked by this super-melodic aspect which alone defines the Swedish screamo, but Kid, Feral brings their unbridled personality, where the limits don't exist, without leaving their music into nonsense, it's a little rock'n'roll-esque at times but without sounding like Every Time I Die or stuff (yes, they also don't have breakdowns in their songs), maybe as if At The Drive-In went back to their crazier roots and also went heavier...

Улыбайся Ветру (SMILE TO THE WIND) - Иллюзии (ILLUSIONS)

~

This is one of the screamo AOTYs, no doubt. A real shooting star, like what I love in Ravin sound, what is striking in Ampere, and what is bluffing and mesmerizing in Kidcrash: a cascade of riffs, progressions and catharsis in less than 20 minutes, an explosion of virtuosity and spontaneity. Everything is deeply catchy, any fan of screamo would like to get lost in these scorched but melodious saccades. Illusions is impressive in many ways, and is really echoing this Russian screamo rich of immensely good bands which aren't hesitate to perpetuate a scene that makes sense in a country where it is morally dangerous, almost illegal, to play screamo today (Russian government really wanted to make illegal the "scene" part of emo) such as факел (whose violinist brutally died at 23 this year...), Berth, your ad could be here, Materic... And the band below.

MINARET - XX

~

And it's just a banger. A violent, dark, ruthless pamphlet against the post-Soviet Russian system, the Putin's Tsarist dream, his deadly ultra-nationalism... Their music is as black and violent as the anger that gnaws them against what they denounce, them and all the other people that Russia oppresses. An explosive mix between crust and a greasy and chaotic screamo, with interludes in the form of samples of military songs. Nothing martial or ambiguous, just some kind of troll and a real molotov cocktail thrown against local traditions and rules. Imagine an even darker version of Portrayal Of Guilt, of "React With Protest records"-screamo, and there you go.

ENTZAUBERUNG - DROPS

~

When I was a kid, people called me "Mr. Weather": I loved to give people the weather of the day, meteorology fascinated me, even if I was terribly afraid of storms. Today, it still intrigues me, but in the opposite way, I love them, I love its fleetingness, its intensity, the way it suddenly change time, temperatures, and even people's moods. This Entzauberung LP, the second of this Paris-based solo project, links two of my obsessions: sky and skramz. Drops is flirting with emoviolence, influenced by the classic bands of the scene, but with a black metal background, including Deathspell Omega or Darkspace, even if you can't really heard it (at least in my ears), in view of the finally very melodic aspect of Entzauberung's music. The texts all revolve around the theme of clouds, and this relatively simple theme still manages to reveal something deep enough: "Each song is named after a type of cloud. To remember us that the clouds offers a magnificent spectacle, universal and free, all around the world. To remember us that to be marveled, you just need to raise your eyes to the sky. And that it costs nothing, just a little time of contemplation" - L., by mail.

"Cumulonimbus capillatus", by pushing a little in the analysis of words, can be interpreted as a desire to emancipate themselves, to flee this society that no longer takes the time to even look a little around to find the millions of opportunities to see beauty in her, nor to appreciate the "hundred thousand nuances waving", preferring "time, money" ... That's my point of view, it may be a little more abstract and less pointed than that. Then there's "Fumulus", which speaks more directly of the gray and the boredom that surrounds us.

PETRUSHKA - RESOLVED EQUATION

~

With this band, we potentially have the ultimate form of an ecossemo band, a term to be taken to the same degree as skramz, which characterizes the Scottish emo scene, created within this scene and used willingly by the protagonists of this sweet sound. The ecossemo is basically lots of post-hardcore, a lot of sweetness, melancholy, bright melodies, and with a hint of slowcore in it. Composed of members of Carson Wells and Human Hands (I mean, I don't lie when I'm talking about an "ultimate form of ecossemo"), this record prefigured without intention the musical orientation of no relic by Carson Wells, while keeping his own universe: a more airy side thanks to that slight reverb, constantly declaimed vocals, many similarities with the scorched, Neil Young-esque emo of Human Hands. In fact, to be absolutely perfect, this band would have needed a little of these rhythmic explosions and these jerks that we find on Thread A Northern Path or Kaddish...

PUNCH ON! - I HAVE NO HISTORY BUT THE LENGTH OF MY BONES

~

In the continuity of what seems to come back now in screamo scene, the English duo Punch On! proposes with their first album I Have No History But The Length Of My Bones a pretty percussive music, which knows how to be aerial when it's necessary, to gain density without dropping breakdowns and dissonances everywhere, recalling some of Majority Rule ideas, but I also hear a bit of English melodic hardcore, this atypical mood that Grappler produced very well for example, I advise you to go (re)listen to this band to make you a precise idea, because it's a little hard to put words on it to be honest...

The screamo side is strongly present in the spontaneity of the whole, the raw side of songwriting and production. I really liked the concrete mix of the 2 universes, I often looked for a true crossover of these 2 music genres, and Punch On! seems to hit the nail. And besides, they have some quite incredible merch: patches with flames as pattern...

FIDDLEHEAD - SPRINGTIME AND BLIND

~

It was impossible for me not to mention this record. This group has existed for 4 years, they released in October 2014 a great EP called Out Of The Bloom in a fairly great confidentiality, even if it's Lockin' Out Records who released it, but their popularity has literally exploded with their first LP, Springtime And Blind. Each of their shows are almost sold-out, their merch is sold out all the time as well, and their popularity keeps climbing. It must be said that a relay like Run For Cover Records is quite valuable. But it's weird for me that the hype takes only now, because in this band, there's the bassist of Youth Funeral, guitarist of Basement, and the drummer of Have Heart, as well as the illustrious Pat Flynn, best known for being the singer of the almighty melodic hardcore band which is collecting the cool side-projects. And this first full-length is essentially influenced by the death of Pat's father, an event that deeply upset him. It's a striking experience to listen to these songs, all the passion and emotions that flow from them, through simple texts that accurately describe the loneliness felt by Pat, he seems really disoriented by this loss. And inevitably, it affects every person who has to endure the loss of a father (when the parent / child relationship is good...). These songs are super catchy, they are easy to memorize, the melodies are irresistible, they scour our spine and give us chills almost instantly. Their music reminds me of Floral Green-era Title Fight, all we like in terms of moody and warm post-hardcore à-la Dischord Records, specifically Lungfish... By the way, even being stranger to this 90's post-HxC scene and just being a Basement fan, it seems to me that the musical sap of what makes Colourmeinkindness also feeds Springtime And Blind and that you'll feel that...

This honesty, this simplicity, give an album with elements that looks like a lot of stuff in itself but put end-to-end, form a very atypical set that we'll recognize among a thousand, a strong album without abusing the term. You'll be convinced just by listening to Pat's words, full of love and despair. I would love to have the chance to live that kind of relationship with my father...

~

Oh, when you tease a record comparing it to Daïtro, Birds In Row, Time To Burn and Mihai Edrisch, you don't need much more to make me impatient. Especially when you present yourself as a Parisian screamo band. E U X appeared on the internets first of all with a lot of discretion, this duo not having lots of skramz connections... Until I came across the publication of a friend who spoke about their music, their influences... And the most frustrating thing is that on their Bandcamp page, there is no entire songs, but extracts of almost a minute from each tracks. A cruel teasing, but that already leaves everyone speechless, me included: the Daïtro influence is really perceptible in the vocals, the Birds In Row ones in the compositions and also this very frenchy early-2000's thing to make screamo but with noise rock and post-metal influences.

Ah yes, because guess what? I had the enormous chance to be able to listen to Et les autres in full, and it's rather at the height of the hype. There's more instrumental passages than shouted ones, the intensity of the vocals is constant and never falters, the compositions are full of small surprises here and there. The texts address the subject of mourning, lack, but also courage, expressed with remarkable strength. I can't wait for you to discover this record, which should be released, at least in digital format, before December, as it was originally planned...

~

I needed to tell you about Altraüma since a very long time: actually I started to write about them, then never finished... I hate myself when things go that way haha! But I now have the opportunity to repent, and finally share my thoughts about this young Spanish band, that I had the chance to meet in real life at Fluff this year, they are adorable people, which makes me blush, by evoking the interest they have in my blog! :')

On Manual De Supervivencia, I hear many elements that remind me of early 90's emo / screamo, whether in riffs as in intentions ("Cincuenta focas y nadie va a cazarlas" is a nice synthesis of that), with this little post-punk vibe that gives relief and air to these compositions loaded with raw emotions, we are not surrounded by huge atmospheres or technicality, it goes straight to the point, even if some finger-picking guitar parts bring a touch of lightness to the whole. I  also hear a Rites Of Spring vibe on "The voluntad de sobrevivir decides", and we can even manage to dance on "Mermelada del cubo de basuras" and its almost disco drum beat, and I find it super cool. We fully appreciate this record after several plays, after discovering all the little details that sprinkles it. It seems very consistent, it lasts 35 minutes but seems to last more... What is not too much: you'll be rather easily convinced if the melodies and rhythms of this record speak to y'all.

BEWILDER - EVERYTHING UP TO NOW

Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate)...

~

We all have this moment alone when we go back on the Count Your Lucky Stars Records roster, where we start to nod on what touches us (and made us cry) like 5 or 10 years ago, these famous midwest emo bands like Joie De Vivre or Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate)... Well, that kind of sound thankfully survived to the war against emotive twinkly music on the skramzternets, and to some labels that made midwest emo kind of a bigger deal (and which fed the fire against the twinklz), and Bewilder is one of the incarnations of this underground resistance. Their secret recipe is to add shoegaze influences (real ones, not just some big fuzz to say "yeah we love the 90s and make sure to get signed by Run For Cover man") to their intimate, warm and ver delicate sound, what makes their sound even more captivating, more beautiful, and even sadder. Everything Up To Know talks about growing up, getting older, the whole lot of loneliness and disillusionment it brings, and the nostalgia for childhood. Basically grown-ups-emos stuff, but you know, it hits me right in the feels because I had 26 a month after finishing this article, even if it's less scary for me now to get older.

These 6 songs are great, but it's not something to listen like easy-listening stuff, keep them for a certain mood, like when it's really nice outside and you're alone with yourself, or if you're at home chilling and that you are nostalgic. It came out in cassette format through strictly no capital letters, a label that knows how to find sweet little emo game that make us cry all the time and make skramz elitists lie about the twinkle thing.
